  • Amid Sardaar Ji 3 Row, Imtiaz Ali Calls Diljit Dosanjh “Son Of The Soil”: “Us Mein Desh Bhakti Poora Hain”

“He is not a guy who fakes things,” says Imtiaz Ali

Imtiaz Ali, who had worked with Diljit Dosanjh in the Netflix original Amar Singh Chamkila, has backed the singer-actor amid the controversy over his Punjaabi film Sardaar Ji 3, featuring Pakistani actor Hania Aamir. Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali appeared as a guest on NDTV Creators Manch and shared his thoughts on the fiasco Diljit has been embroiled in.

    What’s Happening

    • When asked about Diljit’s decision to release Sardaar ji 3 abroad in the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack, Imtiaz Ali said, “I can’t say much on the row, but since I know Diljit, I can say that us mein deshbhakti ka jazbaa poora bhara hua hai (He is a patriot at heart). He is a son of the soil. You can see at all his concerts, he shows up with the Indian flag.
    • “He is not a guy who fakes things. Fakeness ke saath woh kuch nahi karta hai (He doesn’t fake things). No one asked him to do it. At the end of all his concerts, he says, “Main hoon Punjab”, with the Indian flag. I don’t know the details, but casting someone isn’t the decision of the actor. I don’t know how it went, but I know that uske andar desh prem bahut zyada hai (He loves his country too much. Jo log dekh paayenge unke andar ke sach ko, unko ye samajh mein aa jaayega (People who can see the truth, will understand him).”

    The Sardaar Ji 3 Fiasco

Diljit Dosanjh’s Punjabi film Sardaar Ji 3 has released in theatres today.

On Sunday (22 June), Diljit released the trailer of the film, announcing the release date and revealing Pakistani actor Hania Aamir’s presence in the film.

Ever since the trailer dropped, Diljit has been caught in the eye of the storm. The Federation of Western India Cine Employees earlier sent a letter to Imtiaz Ali to cut his ties from the singer-actor.
“Your involvement risks sending a deeply conflicting message, especially given your influence as a director known for socially resonant themes…

“We, therefore, strongly appeal to you to reconsider your collaboration with Diljit Dosanjh and withdraw from associating with any artist who has been officially boycotted by FWICE. Upholding the dignity of our industry and the nation must remain paramount over professional or commercial interests.”

The film body also appealed to the Government of India to blacklist Diljit Dosanjh and Sardaar Ji 3 makers from film industry, also appealing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure that their passports are revoked and their Indian citizenship is cancelled.

  • Jasprit Bumrah Really Overused? Stunning Stat Settled Workload Debate

Over the past few days, reports have been circulating that India pacer Jasprit Bumrah is likely to miss the 2nd Test against England, starting July 2 in Birmingham.

Over the past few days, reports have been circulating that India pacer Jasprit Bumrah is likely to miss the 2nd Test against England, starting July 2 in Birmingham. Bumrah bowled 44 overs in the series-opener, which India lost depite being in a comfortable position for the majority of the first four days. He looked India’s best bowler by a country mile, picking up a five-wicket haul in the first innings. Bumrah’s possible absence means India, who are already trailing 0-1 in the series, have a crisis on their hands.

While there have been calls made to include Bumrah, India head coach Gautam Gambhir before the team’s departure to England had confirmed that Bumrah will miss two of the five Tests due to a workload issue.

Bumrah has picked up 78 Test wickets in 15 matches since the start of 2014, but there’s no denying the fact that Bumrah has been the most overworked bowler in the world.

For the unversed, Bumrah has bowled 110.4 overs during that period, the most by any pacer in the world. Australia’s Mitchell Starc is behind him on second, having bowled 362.3.

England’s Gus Atkinson is second behind Bumrah in the list of bowlers with most wickets (54) in the format since the start of last year. However, he has only bowled 328 overs.

Among Indian bowlers, Mohammed Siraj has also bowled 355.3 overs, having played as many matches as Bumrah. However, he has taken 14 fewer wickets despite bowling 27 overs more than Atkinson.

Most overs bowled by pacer in Tests (since start of 2024)

    Jasprit Bumrah – 410.4 (78 wickets)
    Mitchell Starc – 362.3 (48 wickets)
    Pat Cummins – 359.1 (51 wickets)
    Mohammed Siraj – 355.3 (41 wickets)
    Gus Atkinson – 328 (55 wickets)

In the overall list, Ravindra Jadeja is the only other Indian bowler who has bowled 400 or more overs (400.1).

Siraj’s record is a bit of concern, considering that he will spearhead India’s bowling at Edgbaston if Bumrah does sit out.

Siraj’s performance left much to be desired in Headingley, although he was a bit unlucky with those DRS calls and dropped chances.

  • Meta Reportedly Planning to Acquire Startup PlayAI and Some of Its Employees

Meta’s decision to purchase PlayAI is said to be aimed at acquiring AI talent.

Meta is reportedly planning to acquire the Palo Alto, California-based artificial intelligence (AI) startup PlayAI. As per the report, the acquisition is aimed at bolstering its AI division to compete with the likes of OpenAI and Google. The Menlo Park-based social media giant has been aggressively pushing out new AI models and AI features for its platforms. The reported acquisition plans could help the company gain more employees skilled in AI, as well as the startup’s in-house technology stack.

    Meta to Reportedly Acquire PlayAI

According to a Bloomberg report, the tech giant is considering purchasing PlayAI. The AI startup was founded in 2019 by Hammad Syed and Mahmoud Felfel. It specialises in building real-time conversational agents, voice interfaces, and in-house AI voice models. Citing unnamed people familiar with the matter, the report claimed that the move to acquire the startup comes from Meta’s desire to hire top talent in the AI space.

The acquisition deal, which is yet to be finalised, reportedly also includes a provision to hire some of the startup’s employees. While the acquisition is expected to be completed soon, terms can still change, claimed the report. Notably, the financial terms of the deal are currently not known.

Meta appears to be actively looking for AI startups to acquire. Several reports earlier this month claimed that Mark Zuckerberg’s team held meetings with Perplexity to discuss a possible acquisition. The company has reportedly also made attempts to acquire Runway AI, a startup focused on developing AI models for video generation.

Apart from adding more AI talent to its team, the acquisition of PlayAI can also help Meta in other ways. The social media giant recently added a two-way voice conversation feature to its chatbot, however, in terms of end product, it is just a low-latency text-to-speech (TTS) tool. Compared to competitors such as ChatGPT or Gemini, this is one area where Meta AI is significantly behind.

However, this can change with the acquisition of PlayAI, which specialises in building AI voice generation models and voice interfaces. With this capability, the social media giant can scale up its own AI infrastructure and provide a voice experience that sounds more expressive and human-like.

  • Charith Asalanka To Lead Sri Lanka In ODIs Against Bangladesh

Sri Lanka has named a 16-member squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Bangladesh, scheduled for July 2, 5 and 8.

Sri Lanka has named a 16-member squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Bangladesh, scheduled for July 2, 5 and 8. Charith Asalanka will captain the side while batter Sadeera Samarawickrama has made a comeback to the squad. Samarawickrama played his last ODI against New Zealand in November last year. Having notched up consecutive centuries in the ongoing Test series against Bangladesh, right-handed batter Pathum Nissanka will aim to carry his prolific form into the upcoming ODI series between the two sides.

Squad mainstays Kusal Mendis, Avishka Fernando, Wanindu Hasaranga, and Maheesh Theekshana are all set to feature in the 50-over contests.

Milan Rathnayake, who missed the second Test due to an injury, has been included in the ODI squad, though his participation will depend on a fitness assessment.

The first two matches will be held at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo, while the final ODI will be played at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.

After the ODIs, the two sides will compete in the three-match T20I series starting on July 10.

The two teams are currently playing the second Test of the two-match series in Colombo. The opening game ended in a draw in Galle last week.

In the last home ODI series against Australia before the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year, Sri Lanka secured a clean sweep in the two-match series but failed to replicate that performance in the eight-team competition in Pakistan.

Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are currently engaged in a two-match series, which is part of the World Test Championship. The first match of the series ended in a draw in Galle, while the hosts have taken a lead on a first-innings basis in the second match at the Sinhalese Sports Complex in Colombo.

  • Frustrated Sunil Gavaskar Breaks Silence on Fake Rumours Doing the Rounds

Recently, Gavaskar urged the Indian team management to play star pacer Jasprit Bumrah in all five Tests against England. However, head coach Gautam Gambhir quickly turned down the suggestion, claiming they were more concerned about his workload.

“I think for us, managing his workload is more important because there’s a lot of cricket going forward, and we know what he brings to the table as well. So, before he came to the tour, it was already decided that he was going to play three Test matches. But let’s see how his body turns out,” Gambhir told reporters in the post-match press conference.

According to a report in the Indian Express, Bumrah is likely to miss the 2nd Test against England, starting July 2 in Birmingham.

Before the team’s departure to England, Gambhir had confirmed that Bumrah will miss two of the five Tests due to a workload issue.

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri warned the Indian camp to think twice before resting Bumrah in the second Test in Birmingham.

“If he (Bumrah) was looking at a rest, you may have to think twice. If you don’t have him and then go 2-0 down, it could be an uphill task,” Shastri said on Sky Sports.

Legendary India batter Sunil Gavaskar has called out sports websites and individual accounts for attributing fake quotes against his name over the past few months. Gavaskar, who is currently in England as part of the broadcast team for India’s ongoing Test series, took to social media and blasted the culprits responsible for the same. The 75-year-old also urged everyone to fact-check quotes before sharing them on any platform.
